COMMECT project – Digital Resilience in Real-Life Conditions
How can we secure a sustainable future for rural areas, in a time when climate change, migration, and limited infrastructure are making life and work increasingly difficult in remote communities? This question lies at the heart of the COMMECT project – a European initiative focused on bridging the digital divide and empowering rural regions.
A Living Lab for Rural Digital Empowerment
In the village of Gospođinci, on the edge of a protected natural area in northern Serbia, we’ve established the Serbian Living Lab – a real-world testbed for solutions that combine renewable energy, IoT technology, and artificial intelligence. Equipped with mobile solar generators, sensors, cameras, and communication equipment, we enable stable connectivity and continuous data collection even in locations beyond the reach of traditional networks.
These data are processed through the agroNET platform and transformed into actionable insights – when to irrigate, how to prevent plant diseases, or whether to reduce pesticide use. As Senka Gajinov, product manager for digital farming, puts it:
“The goal of the Living Lab isn’t just to install technology – it’s to create a sustainable, shared infrastructure that the local community can truly use and develop. Farmers don’t need technical specifications; they need tangible benefits – saving water, reducing pesticides, improving yields.”
From Data to Action – and Lasting Change
To support knowledge sharing and accessibility, we’ve also developed a multilingual platform with an AI-powered chatbot, allowing users to get advice and exchange experiences across borders, regardless of language or digital skill level.
One local user described the impact as follows:
“Now we know exactly what’s happening in the field. We monitor soil temperature and moisture, plant health… Based on that data, we irrigate only when needed – we save water and time. Instead of diesel pumps, we now use solar ones, and you can immediately see the difference – in our costs and in the environment.”
COMMECT is not about technology for its own sake – it’s about tools that respond to real community needs. First comes the infrastructure, then the knowledge, and over time, a shift in the way agriculture is practiced: from reactive to proactive, sustainable, and data-driven.
